Two Oklahoma men arrested for shooting, beheading buffalo in Owasso

Two men have been arrested and charged with the shooting and mutilation of two buffalo at a ranch in Owasso, Oklahoma. Gunner Lee Richards, 25, of the Chickasaw Nation, and Tryston Hunter Needham, 29, of the Choctaw Nation, face two felony counts of cruelty to animals and one felony count of grand larceny. The charges were filed following the discovery of the animals on November 14, 2023—one buffalo was found beheaded and the other severely wounded from gunshots, leading to its euthanization.

The ranch owner, Bill Rethke, encountered the deceased animals and later received three yearlings from the Quapaw Nation. Following the incident, both Richards and Needham were taken into custody near an RV park in Owasso by the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service. They were subsequently released on a $50,000 bond each. The details surrounding their next court appearance have not been disclosed.
