Ascension Health restores electronic health records after ransomware attack

Ascension Health System is progressing in restoring its systems after a ransomware attack on May 8. The health care provider has successfully restored access to electronic health records (EHR) in Florida, Alabama, and Austin, Texas, and is aiming to complete the restoration across all its facilities by June 14. Despite the attack, all Ascension hospitals and physician offices, including those in Oklahoma and Kansas, have remained open and continued providing patient care.

The cyberattack also affected Ascension Rx retail, home delivery, and specialty pharmacy sites, which are now back in operation. The restoration of EHR systems is crucial for clinicians to access patient records and return to normal operations. An ongoing investigation is being conducted to understand the attack's impact and to prevent future incidents. Ascension has engaged third-party expert Mandiant to assist in the investigation and remediation process, and they have informed the relevant authorities about the incident.
