NCAA Removes Cannabis from Banned List, Lifts On-Field Coaches Limit

The NCAA Division I council has voted to remove cannabis products from the banned drug class for championships and postseason participation in football. As part of the decision, any penalties for student-athletes who previously tested positive for cannabinoids will be discontinued.

In addition, the council approved a measure allowing all staffers, not just the head coach and 10 assistants, to coach athletes on the field. Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman supported the decision, stating that cannabis products do not provide a competitive advantage. The changes aim to provide increased resources for student-athletes to achieve their greatest on-field potential.
