Metallica’s X Account Hacked to Promote Scam Crypto Coins
The official X account of heavy metal band Metallica was recently compromised to promote a fraudulent Solana-based meme coin called METAL. The scam falsely claimed that the token was launched in collaboration with Ticketmaster and MoonPay. The tweets suggested that METAL could be used to purchase exclusive items such as concert tickets and merchandise. Despite these claims, MoonPay President Keith Grossman confirmed that the platform does not support the METAL token. The scam was identified and taken down within 90 minutes, but not before generating over $10 million in trading volume, which later crashed.
This incident is part of a broader trend where high-profile accounts are being targeted to promote pump-and-dump cryptocurrency scams. Similar schemes have recently targeted the followers of rapper 50 Cent and professional wrestler Hulk Hogan. No official statements have been made by Ticketmaster regarding their involvement in the purported partnership, and the band's official website has not provided any information about the token.
