Google and Fitbit Launch Kid-Focused Smartwatch with Game-Inspired Activity Features

Google and Fitbit have introduced the Fitbit Ace LTE, a new smartwatch designed for children aged seven and older. Priced at $229, the smartwatch aims to combine physical activity with gaming to encourage movement among kids. It features built-in games, a reward system, and parent-approved messaging, along with a rugged design to withstand daily wear and tear. The device requires a network connection and comes with a monthly subscription fee of $9.99 for the Ace Pass, which is essential for most of its features.

The Fitbit Ace LTE is equipped with the same processor as the Pixel Watch and is designed to offer an immersive experience. It includes safety features like reliable calling, messaging, location sharing, and a School Time mode to minimize distractions during school hours. Additionally, the smartwatch supports a Tap to Pay feature, allowing children secure access to their pocket money. Available in the US initially, Google plans to expand its availability to other countries next year. The device will be available for pre-order on Amazon and the Google Store starting June 5.

To address privacy concerns, Google has implemented a data minimization policy for the Fitbit Ace LTE, ensuring that health data is deleted after 30 days and location history is erased after 24 hours. The policy prohibits third-party apps and ads on the device. The smartwatch comes in two colors, Spicy Pebble with a Moovin’ Band or Mild Pebble with an Arcade Band, and features a water-resistant design compatible with most phones running Android 11 or newer and iOS 15 or newer. Battery life varies due to cellular connectivity and GPS tracking, lasting up to 16 hours per charge, but can extend to eight days without these features.
