Apple's AirTag 2 with Enhanced Chip and Tracking Slated for 2025 Release

Apple is preparing to launch a second-generation AirTag item tracker, anticipated to be available around mid-2025. Reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicate that the new tracker, codenamed B589, will include an upgraded chip to enhance location tracking capabilities. This updated model is said to be compatible with Apple's Vision Pro headset, though specific details on this integration remain sparse.

The development of the new AirTag is currently undergoing test runs with manufacturing partners in Asia. Kuo has stated that mass production, initially expected in the fourth quarter of 2024, has been postponed to sometime in 2025. The upgraded AirTag is expected to also feature a louder speaker, extended battery life, and a design that is more wallet-friendly. In addition, there is speculation that the new AirTag may include a rechargeable battery compatible with Apple Watch chargers and a design that would allow for more versatile attachment options without the need for additional accessories. Sales for the AirTag have been robust, with projections reaching 35 million units in 2022, indicating strong consumer interest in item tracking technology.
