Apple Unveils iOS 18 with Enhanced Home Screen Customization
Apple has announced iOS 18, the latest version of its mobile operating system for iPhones, during its WWDC 2024 keynote. The new update introduces significant customization options, including a more flexible home screen layout where app icons and widgets can be freely placed. Users can also customize the tint color of icons, especially in Dark Mode, and lock individual apps with Face ID, Touch ID, or password protection. The Control Center has been revamped with a multipage layout, allowing for better organization of media playback, smart home controls, and shortcuts created by third-party developers.
Messages receive notable updates, including the ability to respond with any emoji or sticker and a feature for sending iMessages via satellite, even without Wi-Fi or cellular service. Enhanced privacy measures are introduced, requiring authentication for app access and enabling users to hide apps in a locked folder. Additionally, the Photos app is redesigned with new filters and a focus on favorite moments, while the Wallet app now includes tap-to-cash charging and event cards. These updates are available in the first developer beta, with a public beta expected later, and a full release slated for the fall.
