Apple Integrates ChatGPT into Siri with iOS 18
Apple has announced the integration of ChatGPT into its ecosystem, which will be available for free on Mac, iPhone, and iPad later this year. This initiative is part of Apple's broader AI push under the banner of Apple Intelligence, aimed at enhancing the utility of its devices. ChatGPT will work with Siri, providing capabilities such as generating recipes, answering questions related to documents, and assisting with writing tasks. The new features will be rolled out with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15. Apple has also indicated that other AI language models will be introduced to its devices in the future.
In addition to the ChatGPT integration, Apple has announced the expansion of its Vision Pro headset outside the US, starting with Canada on July 12, and later to Australia, France, Germany, the UK, China, Japan, and Singapore. This was revealed during the WWDC keynote. Furthermore, Apple’s new AI system will include personalized notifications and the ability to rewrite text across apps, all without changing the original applications. Siri will also see advancements, allowing for more conversational interactions through follow-up questions.
The collaboration with OpenAI, which powers ChatGPT, will see GPT-4 handling cloud-based queries for Apple Intelligence in the upcoming software updates. This integration aims to make Siri more responsive by tapping into ChatGPT’s extensive knowledge base. The Compose feature will also allow users to create content seamlessly. All user interactions with ChatGPT will require explicit permission, and no user information will be logged. This strategic move places Apple in direct competition with other tech giants like Google and Microsoft, while giving OpenAI access to a vast user base.
