WHO Launches Initiative to Develop mRNA Vaccine for Bird Flu

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced a new project to accelerate the development of vaccines for human bird flu infections using messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. Argentinian manufacturer Sinergium Biotech will lead the effort, focusing on developing candidate H5N1 vaccines and establishing proof-of-concept in preclinical models. Once the preclinical data is ready, the technology, materials, and expertise will be shared with manufacturers in low- and middle-income countries to expedite their development and production capabilities.

This initiative will be carried out through the mRNA technology transfer program established with the UN-backed Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) in 2021. The aim is to enable these countries to develop and produce their own vaccines using mRNA technology, which instructs the body to produce a unique protein that stimulates an immune response. The project seeks to enhance pandemic preparedness by fostering greater research, development, and production capacities in these nations.
