US agrees to $138.7M Nassar claim settlement over FBI mishandling

The US Justice Department has agreed to a $138.7 million settlement with over 100 individuals who claimed the FBI mishandled sexual assault allegations against Larry Nassar during 2015 and 2016. The settlement forms part of a broader initiative, with approximately $1 billion being allocated by various entities to compensate the numerous women who allege they were assaulted by Nassar under the pretext of medical treatment for sports injuries.

Nassar, formerly associated with Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics as a team doctor, is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence for his crimes against female athletes. The Justice Department has recognized that there was a significant delay in action, even though FBI agents in Indianapolis and Los Angeles were aware of allegations against Nassar. FBI Director Christopher Wray has expressed regret over the bureau's inaction during this period.

The settlement is seen as an effort to support the healing process for the victims, although it cannot reverse the damage caused by Nassar's actions. Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer noted that Nassar's abuse of his position spanned decades and should have been addressed more promptly and effectively from the start.
