Ukrainian Deputy Energy Minister Arrested for Half-Million-Dollar Bribe

Ukrainian Deputy Energy Minister Oleksandr Kheil has been detained alongside three accomplices for allegedly accepting a $500,000 bribe. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) uncovered the scheme, which involved facilitating the transfer of mining equipment from the conflict zone in Donetsk to the Lviv-Volyn coal basin. The bribe was intended to be paid in five installments of $100,000 each.

The suspects include a private energy trader, the head of an energy company from Mykolaiv, and the manager of a mining enterprise from Donetsk. They were caught after Kheil received part of the bribe. All four individuals have been charged under Article 368 Part 4 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for accepting an improper benefit. If convicted, they could face significant legal repercussions, including up to 12 years in prison. The Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers has since dismissed Kheil from his position.
