Ukraine Claims Successful Prevention of Alleged Coup

Ukrainian authorities have reportedly foiled a coup attempt in Kyiv, detaining several individuals suspected of planning to seize the Parliament and install a provisional government. The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) revealed that the group, described as pseudo-activists, intended to instigate public unrest following Constitution Day on June 28. The suspects were found in possession of weapons, ammunition, and various equipment during raids.

The alleged plot involved plans to announce the removal of the current military-political leadership and block the operations of the Verkhovna Rada. The group faces charges under Article 109 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which pertains to actions aimed at violently overthrowing the constitutional order or seizing state power. If convicted, the suspects could face up to ten years in prison. The investigations and security operations were particularly concentrated in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, a high-security area since the Russian invasion in 2022.
