Turkey Targets Meta for Instagram-Threads Data Practices
The Turkish Competition Authority has taken action against Meta Platforms Inc, implementing an interim measure to prevent the sharing of data between Instagram and Threads, two of Meta's social media platforms. This decision is part of an ongoing investigation into potential anti-competitive practices associated with the integration of these platforms, which could give Meta an unfair advantage in the market.
In a related move, the authority has imposed a daily fine of 4.8 million lira (approximately $148,000) on Meta due to concerns over a notification message sent to users about data sharing practices. The authority claims the message lacks sufficient transparency and fails to provide adequate information, which could also contravene competition law. These measures will stay in effect until a conclusive ruling is reached. As of now, there has been no immediate response from a Meta spokesperson regarding the Turkish authority's decisions.
