Timed Entry System Launches at Mount Rainier Starting May 24

Mount Rainier National Park in Washington is introducing a timed entry reservation system this summer to address congestion and environmental impact due to increased visitation. The pilot program mandates timed entry reservations for the Paradise Corridor from May 24 to September 2 and the Sunrise Corridor from July 4 to September 3. Visitors will need to book these reservations through Recreation.gov for $2 per ticket, which is non-refundable and does not replace the park entrance fee. Reservations are required for entry between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. but visitors can access these areas without a reservation outside of these hours.

The park has experienced a 40% increase in visitors over the past decade, leading to overcrowded trails and damage to fragile ecosystems. To mitigate these issues, the timed entry system aims to distribute visitor numbers more evenly throughout the day. Visitors with reservations at the National Park Inn, Paradise Inn, or Cougar Rock Campground can use their accommodation proof as entry during timed entry days. Park entrance fees must still be paid separately, either onsite or through a valid park pass. The program will be evaluated to determine its effectiveness in managing the park's growing visitation numbers and preserving its natural environment.
