Tech Giants Unite Against Location Tracker Stalking

Apple and Google have joined forces to enhance user privacy by introducing a feature that warns users if a wireless location tracking device is detected nearby. This feature is designed to combat the potential misuse of Bluetooth trackers, which, while useful for locating lost items, can also be exploited for tracking individuals without their consent. The alerts will be integrated into iPhones with iOS 17.5 and Android devices running version 6.0 or later.

When a tracking device is detected moving with a user over time, the system will trigger a "Found Moving With You" alert, regardless of the device's native platform. Users will then have the option to make the tracker emit a sound to aid in locating it and will be provided with instructions on how to disable the tracker if necessary.

Moreover, Apple and Google are collaborating on a public industry specification for Bluetooth tracking devices to ensure uniformity and enhance security across the ecosystem. This initiative has garnered support from Bluetooth tag manufacturers, who have committed to producing tags compatible with the new standard. This collaboration aims to set a precedent for how tech companies can work together to protect consumers from potential privacy infringements.
