SUV Strikes and Kills Baby Elephant on Gerik-Jeli Route

A tragic incident on the East-West Highway near Gerik, Malaysia resulted in the death of a baby elephant after it was struck by a Nissan X-Trail SUV at approximately 8:30 pm. The SUV was driven by a 35-year-old man who was traveling from Pasir Mas, Kelantan, to Gerik. Despite attempts to brake, the driver was unable to avoid hitting the elephant. Following the initial collision, a Perodua Axia car, driven by a 39-year-old, also became involved in the accident when it hit the rear of the SUV.

The drivers and passengers of both vehicles sustained only minor injuries. However, the elephant succumbed to its injuries and its body was handed over to the Wildlife and National Parks Department for further action.

In light of the accident, Gerik District Police Chief Supt Zulkifli Mahmood issued an advisory urging motorists to exercise increased caution to prevent wildlife-related accidents on the highways.
