Southwest Airlines Ends 50-Year Tradition with Assigned Seating

Southwest Airlines is set to overhaul its long-standing open seating model by introducing assigned seating and premium seating options for passengers seeking more legroom. This shift, which marks a significant departure from a 50-year tradition, comes after extensive research into customer preferences and expectations. The airline anticipates that these changes will enhance the customer experience, generate additional revenue, and improve overall financial performance.

In addition to the new seating arrangements, Southwest will also introduce redeye flights for the first time. These overnight flights will begin on February 14, 2025, in nonstop markets such as Las Vegas to Baltimore and Orlando, Los Angeles to Baltimore, Nashville, and Phoenix to Baltimore. This move is expected to offer more flexibility for travelers and further contribute to the airline's financial goals. The changes come on the heels of Southwest's recent report of exceeding profit and revenue expectations for the second quarter.
