Sony Unveils Soneium Blockchain to Boost Web3 Adoption

Sony Group has launched its own blockchain, Soneium, in partnership with Singapore-based Startale Labs. This new public Ethereum layer-2 network aims to mainstream Web3 technology by addressing issues such as scalability and efficiency. Built on Optimism's OP Stack, Soneium is designed to attract developers from various sectors including entertainment, gaming, and finance. The platform will leverage Sony's extensive distribution networks and integrate Sony products like Sony Music, Sony Pictures, and Sony Bank into the blockchain ecosystem.

The initial phase will focus on onboarding Web3 core users and developers, offering a testnet environment in collaboration with Astar Network. This testnet will provide tools and SDKs to help developers build applications and navigate global regulations. Soneium's goal is to achieve "internet-level scalability" to make blockchain technology more accessible to everyday users. The project has already garnered support from Web3 companies such as Optimism, Circle, Alchemy, The Graph, and Chainlink, aiming to create a versatile and general-purpose blockchain platform.
