Sindh Bans Speeches of 143 Ulema and Zakireen for 60 Days During Muharram

The Sindh Home Department has imposed a 60-day ban on the travel and speeches of 143 religious scholars and preachers across 13 districts in the province due to security concerns during the upcoming month of Muharram. This decision follows a recommendation by Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon. The ban is intended to address the expected law and order situation during this sacred Islamic month. Additionally, provincial governments have requested the temporary suspension of six major social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, from Muharram 6 to 11 to prevent the spread of hate speech and misinformation that could incite sectarian violence.

In a related move, the Punjab government has imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings and pillion riding in the province during Muharram. The ban restricts gatherings of more than five people and prohibits statements promoting inter-sectarian, inter-faith, or racial hatred. Construction of barricades on rooftops along procession routes is also banned, and carrying weapons, stones, bricks, bottles, and flammable materials during processions is prohibited. Elderly citizens, women, and law enforcement personnel are exempt from the ban on pillion riding. The federal government has not yet decided on suspending internet services during the holy month.
