Regular Coffee Consumption May Threaten Heart Health

A study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Asia scientific meeting in Delhi, India, has found that frequent consumption of coffee, colas, and energy drinks may cause heart damage over time. The research indicated that drinking more than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day significantly raises blood pressure and heart rate. This daily caffeine intake is roughly equivalent to four cups of coffee, 10 cans of soda, or two energy drinks.

Participants consuming the highest amount, 600 milligrams per day, showed significantly elevated heart rate and blood pressure even after five minutes of rest following a three-minute step test. Dr. Nency Kagathara, the lead researcher, stated that regular caffeine consumption could increase the risk of hypertension and other cardiovascular events in otherwise healthy individuals.
