Pixel 9 to Feature New Samsung Modem with Satellite Link

Google's upcoming Pixel devices, including the Pixel 9 series, Pixel Fold 2, and a new 5G-connected Pixel Tablet, are set to feature a new cellular modem, the Samsung Exynos Modem 5300. This new hardware is designed to enhance performance and power efficiency compared to previous generations. A notable feature of the new modem is its support for the 3GPP Rel. 17 5G specification, which includes the capability for emergency satellite connectivity. This technology allows users to send texts in emergency situations even when traditional cellular networks are unavailable.

The satellite connectivity feature is expected to be initially available through T-Mobile, with potential support from other providers in the future. Although the feature will be limited to text communication and will not support voice calls, Google plans to offer a specialized Emergency SOS app to facilitate these emergency communications. The modem upgrade, exclusive to the Tensor G4 series, will be integrated across all cellular-enabled devices in the lineup.

While the software improvements for the modem are known, details about potential hardware changes remain unclear. Furthermore, there has been speculation about Google's plans to eventually shift to a TSMC-produced Tensor chip in 2025, but no official confirmation has been made regarding this potential transition. The launch dates and availability of the Pixel 9 series, Pixel Fold 2, and the 5G Pixel Tablet have not been officially announced.
