OpenAI co-founder John Schulman joins rival Anthropic

John Schulman, one of the co-founders of OpenAI, has left the company to join rival AI startup Anthropic. Schulman cited a desire to focus on AI alignment and engage in more hands-on technical work as his reasons for the move. Despite ongoing controversies surrounding OpenAI’s approach to AI safety research, Schulman emphasized that his departure was not due to a lack of support within the company.

This departure follows other significant personnel changes at OpenAI. President Greg Brockman has announced an extended leave to "relax and recharge," and product manager Peter Deng has also exited the company. With Schulman’s exit, only three of OpenAI’s original 11 founders remain: CEO Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Wojciech Zaremba. Schulman will join former OpenAI researcher Jan Leike at Anthropic, focusing on AI safety.
