Omega-3 and Mediterranean Diet Combination Can Reduce Acne, Study Shows

A study conducted by the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich has found that omega-3 fatty acid supplements, combined with a Mediterranean diet, can significantly alleviate acne symptoms. The study, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, involved 60 participants with mild to moderate acne who were not using prescription acne treatments. Over a 16-week period, participants adhered to a Mediterranean diet and took omega-3 supplements containing EPA and DHA. The researchers observed significant reductions in acne severity and improvements in the quality of life among participants who reached target levels of omega-3 fatty acids.

At the start of the study, 98.3% of participants had omega-3 deficits. The Mediterranean diet, known for its emphasis on unprocessed foods, fish, nuts, and olive oil, was coupled with omega-3 supplements to enhance the participants' intake of these essential fats. Those who achieved higher levels of omega-3 in their blood showed notable improvements in both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions. The researchers suggest that such dietary interventions should be considered as complementary to prescription medications for acne treatment.
