Obama's Sister Teargassed Live During Nairobi Protests
Auma Obama, the half-sister of former US President Barack Obama, was teargassed during a live CNN interview with reporter Larry Madowo while participating in anti-finance bill protests in Nairobi. She joined the demonstrations in solidarity with young people opposing the Finance Bill 2024. The protests, which have spread to various counties including Mombasa, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Kakamega, Kisii, and Narok, are against proposed tax hikes.
The protests have led to increased security measures, with major roads leading to Parliament being closed as lawmakers discuss the bill. President William Ruto has expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with the protesters. However, there have been accusations of abductions of prominent Kenyans, including activists and social media influencers, which Amnesty International Kenya is currently investigating. This comes as Kenya gains global attention, having been designated a major non-NATO ally by US President Joe Biden, the first sub-Saharan African nation to receive this status.
