NHAI to Boost Highway Green Cover with Miyawaki Plantations

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to implement Miyawaki plantations on land parcels adjacent to national highways in the Delhi-NCR region. This initiative will utilize a Japanese method of ecological restoration and afforestation, aiming to create dense, native, and biodiverse forests that retain groundwater and aid in recharging the groundwater table. Over 53 acres of land have been identified for this purpose, including areas along the Dwarka Expressway, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, and various interchanges on NH 152D.

Ground preparation for the project has already begun, and the planting will be completed during the upcoming monsoon season, with a target completion date by the end of August 2024. The Miyawaki method is known for its rapid growth of forests, which provide numerous environmental benefits such as improved air and soil quality and enhanced micro-climatic conditions. This initiative is expected to contribute to a resilient ecosystem, benefiting both the environment and the local community.
