Nebraska Supreme Court Enforces Limits on Transgender Youth Treatments and Abortion

The Nebraska Supreme Court has upheld a law that combines abortion restrictions with measures to limit gender-affirming health care for minors. The court ruled that the law does not violate a state constitutional amendment that requires bills to adhere to a single subject. This decision comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union representing Planned Parenthood of the Heartland.

The law was the most controversial in the 2023 legislative session and led to an extended filibuster. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, most Republican-controlled states have implemented new restrictions on abortion and gender-affirming care for transgender minors. The American Civil Liberties Union is currently involved in lawsuits challenging many of these restrictions.
