NCCU Names Dr. Karrie Dixon as New Chancellor

Dr. Karrie Dixon has been elected as the 13th chancellor of North Carolina Central University (NCCU) by the University of North Carolina System Board of Governors. Dixon, who holds degrees from North Carolina State University and UNC Greensboro, has extensive experience within the UNC System, having served as chancellor of Elizabeth City State University since 2018. She will replace Johnson O. Akinleye, who announced his retirement earlier this year, effective at the end of the academic year.

Dixon's appointment comes at a time of heightened interest in NCCU, with a nearly 30% increase in applications from prospective students compared to the previous year. Her background includes 23 years of service within the UNC System and recognition as one of "The Ten Most Dominant HBCU Leaders of 2020" by the HBCUE Campaign Fund. Dixon is set to address the NCCU and Durham communities at 10 a.m. following her election.
