Murder Case Filed Against Ex-PM Sheikh Hasina and Six Others

A murder case has been filed against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six others over the death of grocery shop owner Abu Sayed during violent clashes on July 19. The clashes occurred during a procession supporting the quota reform movement. The accused include Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, former DB Chief Harun-or-Rashid, former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, and former Deputy Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker.

The case was filed by Amir Hamza Shatil, a resident of Mohammadpur, and alleges that police indiscriminately shot at students and common people. This is the first case filed against Hasina since she resigned and fled to India following the violent protests that led to the fall of her government on August 5. Over 230 people were killed in the violence that ensued after the government's collapse, bringing the death toll to 560 since mid-July. An interim government, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, has been established and is working to stabilize the situation.
