Microsoft Launches Copilot+ PCs with Built-in Generative AI

Microsoft has unveiled a new class of Windows PCs, dubbed Copilot+ PCs, which are designed to handle more generative AI processes locally rather than relying on cloud-based systems. This initiative involves partnerships with major chipmakers AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm, as well as leading OEMs such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung. These PCs will feature Neural Processing Units (NPUs) to enhance on-device AI capabilities, potentially improving performance and responsiveness for various applications.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella described these PCs as significantly faster, claiming they outperform Apple's M3-powered MacBook Air by 58%. The new devices will incorporate features like the Recall app, which uses multi-modal small language models embedded in Windows to help users locate files and other data on their PC. Additionally, Microsoft is expanding the Copilot integration in Windows to include functionalities in File Explorer, Edge, Notifications, and Settings. The Copilot+ PCs are expected to leverage the recently announced GPT-4o model and are anticipated to be available later this year.
