Meteor Lights Up Skies Over Cincinnati and Kentucky

A bright meteor, known as a fireball, was observed flying over Cincinnati and Kentucky on Thursday evening, prompting numerous reports from residents and attendees of the Green Day concert at Great American Ball Park. The American Meteor Society received over 175 reports from areas including Groesbeck, Loveland, Dayton, Indiana, and Kentucky. According to Wes Ryle, an astronomer from the Cincinnati Observatory, fireballs are pieces of rocky material that heat up and glow as they enter the earth's atmosphere. The meteor's path appeared to be over central Kentucky near Lebanon.

The sighting occurred around 9:45 p.m. and was also seen by spectators at the Bengals preseason game. The fireball was visible across several states, including Indiana and Kentucky, with additional reports from as far as Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia. The event coincided with the tail end of the Perseid meteor shower, which is known for its annual display of meteors. Despite the fireball's bright appearance, Ryle noted that such events typically involve small objects traveling at high speeds.
