Measles Outbreak at Brooklyn Migrant Shelter Identified

Two cases of measles have been identified at the Hall Street migrant shelter in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, according to New York City health officials. The infected individuals are adults residing on the first floor of the shelter. Health authorities are conducting contact tracing to determine who else may have been exposed. Residents without documented measles vaccination will undergo immunity testing and will be required to quarantine for 21 days if not immune.

Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan noted that while measles is highly contagious, the risk to the broader community is considered low because the majority of New Yorkers are vaccinated. The city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is coordinating with Health + Hospitals to provide necessary support and resources to those exposed. This brings the total number of measles cases in New York City to 11 for the year, marking the highest count since 2019.
