Malta and EU unite to provide Mpox vaccines in Africa

Malta has joined other European Union (EU) member states in the European Commission's "Team Europe" initiative to combat the spread of Mpox (Clade I) in Africa. This effort is in response to the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) declaring the disease a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security. The initiative, led by the Director-General of the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (DG HERA), Laurent Muschel, aims to donate vaccines and mobilize resources to address the outbreak.

The first shipment of approximately 100,000 Mpox vaccine doses is set to arrive in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the epicenter of the outbreak. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also declared Mpox a public health concern, activating its highest level of global alert for the second time in two years. In Malta, the first case of Mpox was reported on August 30, followed by a second case on September 3. The Ministry has advised the public to practice safe sex, maintain good hand hygiene, and avoid close contact with individuals displaying symptoms of the disease.
