Long-serving Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee dies at 74

U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee has passed away at the age of 74 following a battle with pancreatic cancer. Jackson Lee served the public for over 30 years, representing Texas' 18th Congressional District, which includes much of the Houston area. She was globally recognized for her advocacy in racial justice, criminal justice, and human rights, with a focus on women and children.

Throughout her tenure, Jackson Lee played a significant role in several legislative victories, including the establishment of the Juneteenth Federal Holiday and the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. She was a senior member of the House Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget committees and served as one of 10 deputies to the House. Jackson Lee's efforts extended beyond Congress as she made a recent bid for the mayor of Houston but was defeated by Texas State Senator John Whitmire.

Jackson Lee is survived by her husband, Elwyn Lee, and their two children, Jason Lee and Erica Lee. Funeral arrangements are pending as her family expressed deep gratitude for her life and contributions.
