Lifespan to Rebrand as Brown University Health with $150M Investment

Lifespan Health System, Rhode Island's largest hospital system, will be renamed Brown University Health following an expanded partnership agreement with Brown University. The rebranding, set to take place over the next several months, is part of a broader effort to enhance the system's ability to recruit and retain top-tier physicians. Brown University will invest $150 million over seven years in Lifespan’s hospital system and contribute an additional $15 million to $25 million annually to support research and education at the Warren Alpert Medical School.

The affiliation agreement aims to strengthen patient care, medical education, and biomedical research in Rhode Island. Lifespan and Brown will remain separate, independent entities despite the name change and financial commitments. The agreement also includes managing Lifespan’s investment portfolio, valued between $600 million and $800 million, over the next four years. The move follows approvals from both the Lifespan Board of Directors and the Corporation of Brown University. This expanded partnership seeks to improve financial stability and competitiveness against other academic medical centers.
