Kenya Confirms First Mpox Case at Tanzania Border

The Kenyan Ministry of Health has confirmed the country's first case of Mpox at the Taita-Taveta One-Stop Border Point (OSBP). The infected individual was traveling from Uganda to Rwanda through Kenya. Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus, is endemic to forested areas of East, Central, and West Africa and can cause symptoms such as a painful rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes.

The ministry has advised the public to avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms and to practice good hygiene to prevent further spread. The high population movement between Kenya and other East African countries poses a significant risk for regional transmission. The East African Community (EAC) has issued warnings to educate citizens on prevention methods and will convene a meeting of health experts to discuss the situation. The World Health Organization (WHO) had previously declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern in July 2022, a declaration that ended in May 2023.
