Italy's PM Meloni to Run in EU Election

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has put forth her candidacy for the upcoming European elections slated for June 6-9. This move is seen as an attempt to galvanize support for her party, the Brothers of Italy, which currently leads in popularity polls with 27% support. The Brothers of Italy party is known for its rightist stance and historical connection to Benito Mussolini's Fascist movement. Meloni, however, has stated that should she be elected, she will not take a seat in the European Parliament.

The forthcoming election is considered a pivotal moment for Meloni's coalition, which has been in power for 18 months. It will serve as a measure of the coalition's standing with the Italian electorate. Meloni has made a commitment that she will not use any of her official time as Prime Minister to engage in campaign activities. The Brothers of Italy is ahead in public opinion compared to its main opposition, the Democratic Party (PD), which has around 20% support, and the 5-Star Movement, which holds 16%.
