Israel Conducts Major Operation in West Bank
Israeli security forces have initiated a large-scale counterterrorism operation in the northern West Bank, targeting the cities of Jenin and Tulkarm. The operation, which involved airstrikes, infantry units, drones, and snipers, aimed to dismantle terrorist infrastructure and apprehend wanted individuals. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, at least two individuals, identified as Kasem Jabarin, 25, and Azam Balut, 39, were killed during the operation in Jenin. Additionally, several other Palestinians sustained injuries.
The Israeli military reported that the operation is part of ongoing efforts to thwart terrorism in the region. The escalation in violence follows the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent Gaza war, which has led to significant casualties on both sides. Since the onset of these conflicts, over 620 Palestinians have been killed due to Israeli military actions, armed conflicts, and extremist attacks, while at least 19 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks.
The operation in Jenin and Tulkarm is considered one of the largest in the northern West Bank in over two decades. Palestinian armed groups, including Hamas and the Islamic Jihad, have reported engaging in exchanges of fire and using explosive devices against Israeli forces. The heightened military activities and ensuing violence have contributed to increased tensions and instability in the region.
