Infineon Unveils World's Largest Silicon Carbide Fab in Malaysia

Infineon Technologies AG has inaugurated the first phase of a new silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor manufacturing facility in Kulim, Malaysia. The initial phase of the project, which has seen an investment of €2 billion ($2.2 billion), is expected to create 900 high-value jobs and is set to become the world’s largest and most competitive 200-millimeter SiC semiconductor fabrication facility. The new plant will focus on the production of SiC semiconductors and gallium nitride (GaN) epitaxy, playing a crucial role in global decarbonization efforts across the automotive, industrial, and data center sectors.

The facility is part of a larger €7 billion ($7.7 billion) investment plan, with an additional €5 billion ($5.5 billion) earmarked for future expansion. Once completed, the site is projected to generate a total of 4,000 job opportunities. The new plant underscores Malaysia's growing importance in the global semiconductor supply chain, particularly as countries seek alternatives to China and Taiwan amid geopolitical uncertainties. The opening ceremony was attended by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who emphasized the importance of local talent development to support the burgeoning chip industry in the country.
