House Republicans Issue Subpoena to Harvard in Antisemitism Investigation

The Republican-led House Committee on Education and the Workforce has subpoenaed top officials from Harvard University, including Harvard Corporation Senior Fellow Penny Pritzker, Interim President Dr. Alan Garber, and Harvard Management Company CEO N.P. Narvekar. This action comes as part of an ongoing investigation into the university's response to antisemitism on campus. Committee Chairwoman Rep. Virginia Foxx expressed her dissatisfaction with Harvard's level of cooperation, noting that a significant portion of the documents provided were already publicly accessible.

The investigation, which scrutinizes Harvard's measures to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for Jewish students, escalated after the university allegedly failed to produce "priority documents." The committee, which has never before issued subpoenas in its history exceeding 150 years, requested information in 11 key areas, but according to Foxx, the university did not deliver documents related to two of the four main requests, including board meeting minutes following specific events such as the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel.

Despite Harvard's submission of over 2,500 pages of documents, with around 40 percent being public information, the committee deemed this insufficient. The subpoenas signal a heightened level of scrutiny by the committee and suggest a more assertive approach to the investigation. The university was given a deadline until 5 p.m. on February 14 to comply with the committee's demands for the specified documents.
