Hawaii-born sumo icon Akebono passes away at 54

Akebono Taro, the first foreign-born wrestler to achieve the prestigious rank of "yokozuna" in the traditional Japanese sport of sumo, has passed away at the age of 54 due to heart failure. Born Chad George Ha'aheo Rowan in Hawaii, Akebono made history in the sumo world by winning 11 grand tournaments and becoming a significant figure in promoting the sport internationally. After his retirement from sumo in 2001, Akebono transitioned to professional wrestling, where he continued to find success as a two-time Triple Crown Champion with All Japan Pro Wrestling.

Tributes have poured in from around the world, including from current AEW champion Samoa Joe and the United States ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel. Emanuel remembered Akebono as a "giant" in sumo and a bridge between the United States and Japan, highlighting his influence and the cultural exchange he facilitated. The family of Akebono has announced that they will hold a private celebration of his life, honoring his legacy both in and out of the sumo ring.
