Haryana to Establish Waste-to-Charcoal Plants in Faridabad, Gurugram

NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVNL), a subsidiary of NTPC Ltd, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Municipal Corporations of Gurugram and Faridabad in Haryana to establish two waste-to-charcoal plants, also known as green coal plants. The agreement was signed by Union Minister Manohar Lal, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and Minister of State for Urban Local Bodies Subhash Sudha. These plants will convert 1,500 tonnes of waste collected daily from Gurugram and Faridabad into charcoal.

The green coal plants will be the first of their kind in the country and are projected to cost around Rs 500 crore each. The Municipal Corporations will provide 20 acres of land each for the plants, which are expected to be operational within 30 months. This initiative is seen as a permanent solution to the waste management problem in these cities and aims to increase energy production, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat campaign.
