Google to Invest $2 Billion in Malaysian AI Data Center

Google has announced a $2 billion investment to establish its first data center and cloud region in Malaysia. This initiative is part of a broader partnership with the Malaysian government to advance the nation’s ‘Cloud First Policy,’ which includes implementing top-tier cybersecurity standards. The data center will host Google’s digital services such as Search, Maps, and Workspace, while the cloud region will cater to both public and private sector clients. This investment is projected to contribute over $3.2 billion to Malaysia's GDP and support 26,500 jobs by 2030.

The data center will be located at the Elmina Business Park in Selangor state, developed by Sime Darby Property. This move comes in the wake of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's plan to inject at least $107 billion into the semiconductor industry. It also follows similar investments by other tech giants, including Microsoft's $2.2 billion commitment to cloud and AI infrastructure in Malaysia. Additionally, Google plans to support AI literacy programs for students and teachers, further contributing to Malaysia's digital transformation goals.
