French Mayor's Home Yields 70kg Cannabis Cache

In a significant drug bust, French authorities seized 70 kilograms of cannabis at the home of Jamilah Habsaoui, the mayor of Avallon in the Yonne department. The discovery was made during a nation-wide anti-drug trafficking campaign, with the mayor and two of her brothers among seven individuals arrested. The operation, named "Place net XXL," targeted the mayor's home, where her brother, previously convicted for drug trafficking a decade ago, was implicated. A subsequent search was also conducted at Habsaoui's workplace.

The operation in Avallon is part of a larger crackdown on drug trafficking across France. The campaign, which has been active in several French cities including Marseille, Paris, Lyon, and Lille, has led to the arrest of 1,738 individuals, with authorities confiscating 150 kilograms of drugs and 2.4 million euros. President Emmanuel Macron had earlier announced an unprecedented operation to address drug trafficking, particularly in Marseille.

As the investigation continues, Habsaoui has been placed in police custody, and the public prosecutor of Auxerre, Hugues de Phily, confirmed that further searches and hearings are ongoing. The operation aims to dismantle drug trafficking networks and reduce the drug trade in French cities.
