A freighter named Michipicoten has collided with an underwater object in Lake Superior, leading to it taking on water. The incident occurred around 6:53 a.m. on Saturday, approximately 35 miles southwest of Isle Royale. The vessel, which is 689 feet long and has a capacity of 22,300 tons, was carrying taconite, a low-grade iron ore, and had 22 people on board at the time of the collision.
The United States Coast Guard responded promptly to the distress call by deploying a helicopter and multiple boat crews to assist the ship. Water pumps were used to reduce the ship's list from 15 degrees to 5 degrees, and no leaks or spills have been reported. The freighter remains stationary in Lake Dulit, and the situation is under control with no immediate environmental threats observed.
