Forest Officials Gun Down Two Suspected Poachers in Assam Sanctuary
Two brothers, Jalil Uddin and Sameer Uddins, were shot dead by forest officials in Assam's Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary in Nagaon. The incident occurred during a routine patrol when the brothers were found smuggling fish in Rowmari Beel. The confrontation escalated into gunfire, resulting in their deaths. Their bodies were transferred to Nagaon Hospital, and a significant number of police and forest department personnel have been deployed to maintain order and security.
The sanctuary, a buffer zone of the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve, has a history of poaching and illegal activities. The Assam government has recently conducted anti-encroachment operations, restoring forest cover and reintroducing rhinos. A magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident, and an FIR has been lodged by the forest department. The area has seen increased conservation efforts following the eviction of illegal settlements.
