Essar to Build Europe's First 100% Hydrogen-Fuelled Power Plant

Essar Energy Transition (EET) has announced the launch of EET Hydrogen Power, Europe's first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power (CHP) plant, to be completed by 2027 at its Stanlow refinery in the UK. The project will be developed in two phases to achieve a capacity of 125 MW of power and produce 6,000 tonnes of steam daily. By replacing hydrocarbons with hydrogen, the plant aims to cut carbon emissions by approximately 740,000 tons per year.

The new hydrogen power plant will replace existing boiler units that currently generate around 50 MW of power for refinery operations. This investment aligns with EET Fuels' goal to become the world's lowest carbon process refinery and EET Hydrogen's aim to be the UK's leading low-carbon hydrogen producer. The initiative is part of EET's broader $3 billion energy transition strategy in the North West of England, which includes contributing to the HyNet industrial cluster to lower regional carbon footprints.
