Erdogan and Hamas Chief Haniyeh convene in Istanbul for talks
In a significant diplomatic engagement, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey convened with Hamas Political Bureau Chairman Ismail Haniyeh in Istanbul. Discussions centered on the escalating conflict in the Middle East, specifically the ongoing military offensive in the Gaza Strip, as well as efforts to deliver humanitarian aid and establish a fair and lasting peace in the region. The meeting, which spanned over two and a half hours, was attended by Turkish intelligence chief Hakan Fidan and other high-ranking officials.
President Erdogan communicated Turkey's stance on the conflict, emphasizing the need for Israel to be held accountable for what he termed as "oppressive and genocidal acts" against the Palestinians. He also expressed condolences for the Palestinian lives lost, including Haniyeh's family members, and reiterated Turkey's commitment to diplomatic efforts that focus on the plight of the Palestinians. Moreover, Erdogan urged unity among Palestinian factions with the aim of establishing a Palestinian state.
This engagement took place against the backdrop of a reported Israeli attack on Iran and only three days after Haniyeh's meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Fidan in Doha. Erdogan underscored that Israel should not benefit from the developments between Iran and Israel, stressing the importance of maintaining international focus on Gaza. Turkey has condemned the violence following Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7 and has called for an immediate ceasefire. The talks with Hamas leadership highlight Turkey's active role in seeking to mediate and resolve the crisis.
