Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Launches This November

Square Enix has announced the release of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, scheduled for November 14, 2024. This modernized version of the classic RPG will be available on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. The game features HD-2D graphics that blend 16-bit-style sprites with modern environmental effects, an enhanced user interface, and various quality-of-life improvements. Pre-orders for both physical and digital editions are now open, with a Trouble-Free Travel Kit included as a bonus.

Following the release of Dragon Quest III, Square Enix plans to launch HD-2D remakes of Dragon Quest I and II in 2025. These remakes were first announced during the Nintendo Direct on June 18, 2024. The reimagined games aim to preserve the original's gameplay mechanics while enhancing the visual experience and updating features for modern platforms. A Collector’s Edition of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is also available for pre-order, offering additional in-game items and physical collectibles.

Despite significant graphical updates, initial feedback on the remake's animations and combat suggests they may lack the snappiness some players expect. However, the game retains its classic RPG charm, aiming to bridge the gap between nostalgic design principles and contemporary gaming standards. The game is priced at $60/£60, which is higher than typical remakes, reflecting Square Enix's confidence in the value of this revival.
