Disney, Fox, Warner Bros. Discovery Reveal Venu Sports Streaming Service

Netflix is collaborating with Skydance Sports and NFL Films, as well as Stardust Frames Productions, to produce a 10-episode documentary series focused on Jerry Jones, the influential owner, president, and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys. The series promises exclusive footage and interviews, charting how Jones transformed the Cowboys into the NFL's most valuable franchise. It will include perspectives from prominent figures such as Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders, Emmitt Smith, former U.S. President George W. Bush, and Nike founder Phil Knight. The release dates for the documentary have not been disclosed.

Meanwhile, a new sports streaming service, Venu Sports, is poised to launch in the fall. This service is a joint venture between Disney/ESPN, Fox Corp., and Warner Bros. Discovery. The platform, led by CEO Pete Distad, aims to offer a bundle of live sports content to consumers who do not subscribe to traditional pay TV. Venu Sports will include ESPN+ and content from the companies' sports-centric networks. The service will also offer the option to be bundled with Disney+ or Max. Despite anticipation, pricing details remain unannounced. Regulatory approval is still pending, and the Justice Department is expected to review the venture for potential anticompetitive issues. Concerns have been raised by various industry players, including Fubo and DirecTV, with some calling for congressional hearings to examine competition within the pay-TV market. Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch has projected an estimated 5 million subscribers for Venu Sports within five years, with an addressable market of 50 to 60 million.
