Dalai Lama to Visit US for Knee Treatment Amid Health Concerns

The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, is set to travel to the United States for medical treatment of his knees. This marks his first international trip since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in December 2019. His office announced that all public engagements, including audiences, will be suspended from June 20 until further notice.

The Dalai Lama, who is currently 88 years old and has been living in exile in Dharamsala, India, since fleeing Tibet in 1959, will resume his regular engagements upon his return. His last visit to the US was in June 2017, when he visited the Mayo Clinic in Rochester for a routine medical check-up. The decision to pause public engagements follows his recent gift of Lord Buddha's sacred Kapilavastu relics, which he received earlier this year at a temple in Sri Lanka.
